Chiplun (population 60,000) is a city on the Mumbai–Goa highway (NH-17) in western India. It is located at 17°32N 73°31E. The city is about 320 km south of Mumbai in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.
It is an industrial town catering to mostly the top pharmaceutical and chemical industries. It is a major stop on the Konkan Railway.
The name Chiplun means The abode of Lord Parshuram. The city lies on the banks of the river Vashishti. To the east of the city lies the Western Ghats.The city has own drama theatre Indira Gandhi Sanskrutik Kendra, and a stadium for sports is being constructed.
The main language spoken is Marathi although almost all the people can speak Hindi. Spoken English is a rarity in Chiplun although quite a few people can read the language.
