Gobichettipalayam (often simply called Gobi) is a semi-rural community in the Erode District of Tamil Nadu state, India. It was christened on June 1, 1949, named after Gobana Chettiar, a wealthy old man who lived at the site.
At coordinates 11.46° N 77.43° E, Gobichettipalayam is about 40 km from District headquarters Erode and 85 km from Coimbatore. It is warm and humid for most of the year. The surrounding water logged paddy fields contribute to the high humidity levels.
Gobichettipalayam was previously known as Verapandi Gramam, and more quondam documents and records still use that name.
The economy of Gobichettipalayam centers on rice paddies, sugarcane, banana, and turmeric. There are also growing numbers of spinning mills to support the weaving industry developing in the region.
The people of Gobi are generally regarded warm and extremely hospitable. They are extremely superstitious like most rural Indian communities. The town is home to the Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, a 5-acre (20,000 mē) Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kaliamman (an incarnation of Kali). The town is known for its lush green spectacular paddy fields that extend to the horizon in 360 degrees. Gobi is strikingly different from other perky towns like nearby Erode.
