Gulbarga is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the administrative headquarters of Gulbarga District, and of Gulbarga Division.Gulbargas earlier name was Kalburgi and rose into prominence when it was made the capital by the Bahmani rulers. It served as the administrative headquarters of the kingdom from 1347 to 1428. The city was annexed by Aurangzeb in the 17th century. The erstwhile rulers of Hyderabad wrested control of the town in the 18th century.
Agriculture is the main source of income here. Though the land here is very fertile, much of the farming is dependent on rains (non-irrigated). However, this is changing rapidly with the construction of the Upper Krishna Project.
A railway line connecting the southern part of India to Mumbai and Delhi passes through Gulbarga.
Major attractions in the town include Gulbarga fort, noted for its 15 towers, the tombs of the Bahamani rulers, the Haft Gumbaz, the tomb of Khwaja Bande Nawaz (an important local Muslim saint) and the Sharana Basaveshwara temple. The pilgrim center of Gangapur is 38 km away.
Gulbarga will be re-named to its pre-colonial name Kalburgi. The locals in & around the city have always referred to it as Kalburgi. The renaming will be done on 1st Nov 2006, the day marks the 34th anniversary of Karnataka Rajyotsava.
