Jorhat is the administrative headquarters of Jorhat District, in Assam. Situated on National Highway 37, it acts as the transit point for the world largest river island – Majuli. Jorhat is about 314 km north-east of Guwahati.
Places of tourist interest include the Dakhinpat Satra, Garamurh Satra, Auniati Satra, Kamalabari Satra and Bengenaati Satra. Major point of tourist attraction is the Vaishnava Satras, founded by Sankardeva, the father of Assamese culture.
Jorhat literally means two hats or mandis – the Macharhat and Chowkihat, which once stood on the two different banks of the river Bhogdoi during the 18th century. It was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom.
