Mahabubnagar (formerly known as Palamooru) is a city of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is 100 km southwest of the state capital Hyderabad. Mahabubnagar, formerly known as Rukmammapeta and Palamooru, is the administrative headquarters of Mahabubnagar District. It is located 96 km to the southwest of Hyderabad. The city has a population of 130,849 (agglomeration 139,483) (2001 census). It is the headquarters of the Mahabubnagar District. The city is named after Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, who was the Nizam of Hyderabad from 1869-1911 AD. It has been the capital of Mahabubnagar District since 1883. Cotton ginning, oilseed and rice milling form the principal industry of the town.
The district has a population of 3,513,934 of which 10.57% is urban as of 2001. This is the most backward district in Andhra Pradesh.Region and the second largest in Andhra Pradesh State. This district consists of 1553 Revenue Villages, 1347 Gram Panchayats, 64 Mandals and 5 Revenue Divisions. Mehboobnagar District has 13 Assembly Constituencies and 2 Parliamentary Constituencies.Places of tourist interest include mosques and dargahs of Bagamaru Saheb, Syed Abdul Khader Saheb, Majoot Mardan Ali Shah Saheb and Pillalamari.
