Phaltan is a taluka and a town in the Satara District of the Indian state of Maharastra. The town is about 71 km north-east of the city of Satara.Phaltan acceded to the Dominion of India on March 8, 1948 and is currently a part of Maharashtra state. Descendants of the former royal family still control, if not govern, all aspects of life in Phaltan.
Phaltan has one of the eleven Industrial Training Institutes of the district.The state measured 397 square miles (1,028 kmē) in area. According to the 1901 census, the population showed a decrease of 31% in the decade at 45,739.Phaltan is home to the famous Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute, an NGO working towards holistic living, sustainable agriculture and rural development.
