Phillaur is located on the north bank of the Sutlej River, in the Jalandhar District of Punjab. Over the years, the town had been under the rule of Jats, Rajputs and Sikhs before the British gained control in 1846. This town was named by a Sanghera Jut called Phul who named it earlier is Phulnagar. However the Naru Rajputs, sent by Rai Shahr, occupied this town when Shahr\'s son Ratan Pal left Mau and settled in Phillaur.
Places of tourist interest include the Phillaur Fort and the Finger Print Bureau, the biggest and oldest of its type in the country. The ancient sites of Nagar Village (9 km to the north-west) and Katpalon (7 km) are worth a visit. The annual Sarvodaya Mela held, on the right bank of the River Sutlej, on the 12th February to commemorate the immersion ceremony of Mahatma Gandhi\'s ashes is a major draw.
