Sangrur, the administrative headquarters of Sangrur District, is an ancient town situated 48 km south of Patiala, in Punjab. It was the erstwhile capital of the princely state of Jind until 1948. Sangrur is located on cross section of Delhi Ludhiana and Patiala Bathinda roads and on Ludhiana-Jakhal railway line. It is 80 Kms from Ludhiana and 48 Kms from Patiala.
Sangrur derives its name after Sanghu, a Jat who is thought to have founded the town 400 years ago. In the 18th century, it became a part of the Nabha State. Four gates, namely Sunami, Patiala, Dhuri, and Nabha – each named after a neighboring town located in that direction, welcomes one into the town. Beautiful gardens and shops surround the town.
Sangrur is not a tourist spot as it does not boast of any places of tourist interest. There are a few places of some historical or religious importance including Guru-dwaras and Hindu Temples of historical importance. A well planned Banesar Garden in the north of the city with an attractive marble baradari is a popular picnic spot. It also has a mini-zoo. Bal Gopal is one of the cheap and better restaurants and Hot Chop happens to be one of the more popular hotels there.
